An Interruption (extract, pretend, repeat)

Eleni Berg, An Interruption (extract, pretend, repeat), 2025. Terracotta, acrylic, gold leaf, underglaze, glaze, aluminum leaf, wool, found objects, 48 x 36 x 50".
(on wall) paper, acrylic, pencil, gold leaf, aluminum leaf.

Following the forms of maps and diagrams for extraction locations in Guatemala, both current and "potential" oil, gold, and silver mines, the ancestral beings attempt to reconnect with a familiar land, only to find a defiled source, unclear if a connection to maíz and land can ever be retraced again. The process of extraction in Guatemala is done without permission from indigenous populations, and the corporations in control of the mines are able to hide their violations in plain sight.

In the Maya K'iche origin story, as recorded in the sacred text Popol Vuh, the first human bodies were made of corn. If land continues to be stolen, poisoned, and violently extracted for the pleasures and profits of Western corporations, it is almost certain the corn in our bodies will rot alongside the broken land.
